Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • For the Buttercream Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 –4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 –3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional Decorations
  • Fresh berries
  • Edible flowers
  • Chocolate ganache
  • Caramel drizzle
  • Crushed nuts

Method
 

  1. Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.
  4. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, mixing until combined.
  9. Step 2: Bake
  10. Divide batter evenly between pans.
  11. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  12. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
  13. Step 3: Make Buttercream
  14. Beat softened butter until creamy.
  15. Gradually add powdered sugar.
  16. Add cream and vanilla.
  17. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  18. Step 4: Assemble the Dirty Cake
  19. Level cake layers if needed.
  20. Spread frosting between layers.
  21. Apply a thin coat of frosting around the outside.
  22. Use a scraper to lightly remove excess frosting, allowing cake layers to show through.
  23. Step 5: Decorate
  24. Top with berries, flowers, or ganache as desired.

Notes

  • Chill cake layers before frosting to reduce crumbs.
  • Do not over-frost — the semi-naked look is intentional.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
